Samara Backyard is a factory-built accessory dwelling unit made by Samara, a Redwood City company backed by Airbnb. It builds steel-framed units in its own factory in Mexicali and sells them to California homeowners. Unit prices run from $152,000 for a 420 sq ft studio to $277,000 for a 950 sq ft two-bedroom, and installation is quoted separately after a site visit.

Samara ADU cost: unit price plus installation
The published figures are unit prices, "plus installation". Installation is quoted after Samara visits the site, and it covers design, permits, the factory build, site preparation including the foundation and utilities, the crane, and decks and stairs.
Samara does not publish a typical installation figure today. An independent estimate from January 2023, against an older price list, put installation at about $105,000. Treat that as a reminder to budget for site work, not as a current quote.
How long it takes
Samara describes about 8 to 9 months from start to move-in: roughly 5 months for permits, about a month of site preparation, a few hours to set the unit, and about a month of finishing work.
How it is built
Each unit is a volumetric module with a cold-formed steel frame, steel cladding and a steel roof, built in the factory Samara bought in Mexicali in 2024 and carrying the California HCD factory-built insignia. Steel does not burn, which matters on wildfire-prone lots. Samara used the same system for an Altadena fire rebuild in January 2026.
