01 / Scope & budget
What does a driveway cost in Los Angeles?
Ask the City's building department what a driveway costs and it cannot tell you. Since September 2024 only 18 permits for one- and two-family homes named a driveway as the main job, far too few to say anything about price. The public end of a driveway, the approach, curb and sidewalk, is handled by the Bureau of Engineering under its own permit.
$5,788
The better anchor is the Census Bureau's housing survey. About 78,000 households in the Los Angeles-Long Beach-Anaheim metro reported driveway or walkway work in the 2023 survey, and they spent an average of $5,788. That number mixes patch jobs and new walkways with full replacements. No public source prices a full Los Angeles tear-out, so the two figures below cover the smaller jobs most households report.
All the numbers and where they come from
| Figure | Value | What it measures |
|---|---|---|
| What metro households spent | $5,788 | Average spent on driveway or walkway projects in the Los Angeles-Long Beach-Anaheim metro in the 2023 survey (margin of error $1,782). A median is not published for the metro. (U.S. Census Bureau, American Housing Survey 2023, Table 16) |
| Metro households doing the work | About 78,000 | Households in the Los Angeles-Long Beach-Anaheim metro reporting a driveway or walkway project in the 2023 survey (77,900, margin of error 21,800). (U.S. Census Bureau, American Housing Survey 2023, Table 16) |
| National median | $2,914 | Median spent on driveway or walkway projects nationally in the 2023 survey (margin of error $588). (U.S. Census Bureau, American Housing Survey 2023, Table 16) |
| City driveway permits | 18 | City of Los Angeles building permits for one- and two-family homes since September 2024 whose main work is a driveway. Too few for a price; public approach, curb and sidewalk work goes through the Bureau of Engineering instead. (City of Los Angeles building permits (LADBS), open data) |
| Cement mason wage | $30.67 an hour | Median cement mason and concrete finisher wage in the Los Angeles-Long Beach-Anaheim metro, May 2025. Construction laborers earned a median $28.28. Contractors bill above wages. (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, May 2025 wages, Los Angeles-Long Beach-Anaheim) |
Know the surface area, the demolition and the base specification before you compare proposals; those three decide most of the price.

Your next conversation
Draw the driving and walking routes separately. Specify paver thickness, base, edge restraint, joint material and transitions at doors and the public sidewalk.
- Are paths included in the measured area?
- What supports vehicle loads?
You can change the project details before sending anything.
What moves the price
Concrete versus interlocking pavers, demolition and haul-off, excavation, compacted base, drainage, slope, edge restraints and access for equipment all affect the bid. Ask for both the material specification and the preparation beneath it.
At the Los Angeles property line, private paving meets the public sidewalk and driveway approach. A quote that ends at the property line is not equivalent to one that includes a curb-cut or apron change. Keep those costs and responsibilities visible.
A better order of decisions
- Measure the driveway and path separately; mark vehicles, entry doors, utilities, trees and low spots where water collects.
- Choose the surface and agree on excavation, base and drainage details. Ask whether the existing footprint and street approach will stay.
- Compare bids using the same dimensions and assembly, then confirm any public-right-of-way approvals before scheduling demolition.
What a driveway project budget buys in Los Angeles.
About $3,000
The national median households reported for driveway or walkway work, $2,914. Crack repair, resealing, or a short new walkway section, with the existing base left in place.
About $6,000
The average metro households reported, $5,788. A new walkway, a replaced section of driveway, or a resurfacing over a base that is still sound. A full tear-out with new excavation and base sits above this, and needs a measured bid.
Where a driveway bid stops matters as much as its total.
The Census figure is an average across every kind of driveway and walkway job, most of them small. A bid for a full replacement is priced by area and by layers: demolition, excavation depth, base thickness, drainage, edge restraint and the finish. Two bids with the same total can describe very different driveways underneath.
Check where each bid stops. One may end at the property line; another may include the apron and curb and the Bureau of Engineering permit that goes with them. The metro's median cement mason earned $30.67 an hour in May 2025 and the median construction laborer $28.28, and the contractor's rate covers more than that.
Bring the bid checklist to every contractor so the numbers describe the same job.
02 / Local rules
What needs checking before permits?
Inside the City of Los Angeles, work on a driveway approach, curb or sidewalk in the public right-of-way can require a Bureau of Engineering A-Permit. Paving that stays on your side of the property line is a separate question for LADBS.
The city’s Bureau of Engineering explains separate review for driveway construction, modification and replacement. Ask who will obtain an approval, whether LADOT review is needed for the specific approach, and who pays for public-sidewalk work.
Start with LA Bureau of Engineering driveway procedures. For unincorporated areas, check LA County Building and Safety; other cities have their own departments.
03 / Hiring well
A better way to compare bids
The cheapest square-foot price may omit the base or drainage. Give every contractor the same drawing and ask for separate prices for private paving and any work in the public right-of-way.
Before the first call: Bring photos of cracks and standing water, approximate driveway and path dimensions, the desired material, and a note about whether the curb or sidewalk will change.
- What area is included for vehicles and for walking paths?
- What demolition, excavation and compacted base are included?
- How will runoff be directed away from the house and sidewalk?
- Are paver thickness, pattern, edge restraints and joint materials specified?
- Who handles any curb, apron or sidewalk approval and inspection?

05 / Quick answers
Common questions
Do I need a permit to replace a driveway in Los Angeles?
At the curb, often yes. City of LA work on the driveway approach, curb or sidewalk can require a Bureau of Engineering A-Permit. Paving that stays on your side of the property line is a separate question for LADBS.
Are pavers and poured concrete comparable by square foot?
Only if excavation, base depth, drainage, edge treatment and demolition are equivalent. Ask for the full assembly, not just the visible finish.
How long should I allow?
Ask for dates for the permit, demolition, base work and the cure time before the driveway takes a car. Permit review, material ordering, cure time and site conditions can extend the full schedule.
