Prefab pools compared: fiberglass, precast plunge and container pools
Three kinds of ready-made pool. Nineteen makers. What the prices really include.
Our 2026 guide compares published prices, warranty fine print, delivery and the company changes older lists miss.
The short answer
As of October 2026, a precast concrete plunge pool lists at about $25,000 to $34,000 for the pool and equipment, a shipping container pool at about $31,770 to $81,500, and a fiberglass pool at $45,000 to $150,000 installed according to manufacturer guides. Delivery, the crane, site work, fencing and permits decide the final number. Among fiberglass makers, Thursday, Latham and Leisure share the top score. Soake leads the precast pools, and Ecopool the container pools, just ahead of Modpools.
Scores compare makers within each type, not across types. A container pool and a fiberglass pool are different products. How we score.

Compare the makers
Prices checked October 2, 2026Compare the price basis, not just the number. Fiberglass makers quote installed ranges; precast and container sellers quote the pool and its equipment before delivery and site work.

What a prefab pool price actually includes
Published pool prices disagree mostly because they count different things. HomeAdvisor's national average for a fiberglass pool is $33,270; River Pools puts a turnkey fiberglass project at up to $200,000. Both can be right. Read each number against the level it describes.
| Price level | What it covers | Published examples |

Warranty fine print, side by side
The headline says lifetime; the document decides. These are the terms each company publishes, checked October 2, 2026. Where a company does not publish something, we say so. Read the current document before you sign.

| Leisure Pools | Lifetime, plus lifetime osmosis | Not stated | 10 years gelcoat | Ask for the written document |
| Barrier Reef Pools | Lifetime limited | Once | 15 years against blistering | Covers the pool holding water |
| Thursday Pools | 35 years | Once (River-brand document) | 15 years | Site wording mixes 35-year and lifetime |

Will it fit? Crane, weight and access
Every prefab pool arrives on a truck and most are lifted by crane, so the route from the street to the hole matters as much as the pool. Fiberglass shells are limited to about 16 ft wide by highway rules. Precast concrete pools are heavy: Plungie lists 14,600 to 25,600 lb dry, and Dirigo's larger pools can reach about 45,000 lb. Plungie puts a crane at $3,000 to $10,000; a Soake partner in Texas has seen $15,000 and more where a pool has to go over the house.
- Measure the distance from where a truck can park to the pool spot, and note power lines and trees.
- Ask the maker for the weight and a lifting plan, and get the crane quote before you order.
- Budget for electrical: Soake says its panel typically needs a 50 amp circuit, more with a heat pump.
- Check setbacks and barrier rules with your building department before you pay a deposit.
In California any structure holding water over 18 inches deep is a pool, so every product here needs a permit, and a new pool at a home needs at least two of seven drowning-prevention features, such as an enclosure at least 60 inches high, a safety cover or alarms. The part a pool price leaves out
Get your yard checked by a local pool contractor
Crane access, excavation, the pad, electrical, fencing and permits decide most of the gap between a pool price and a finished backyard. In Southern California, the Bay Area and Greater Seattle, we can introduce you to 2 to 3 licensed pool contractors who can walk your yard and price that part.

Which pool brands changed hands or names?
Older lists still name brands that were sold, merged or renamed. This is what we found in company records and trade reporting, checked October 2, 2026.
| Company | Status | When | What happened |
|---|---|---|---|
| Viking Pools, Blue Hawaiian, Trilogy | Now part of Latham | 2010 to 2012 acquisitions | Viking, Latham's fiberglass division, bought Blue Hawaiian in 2010 and Trilogy in 2012. When we checked in October 2026, the Viking and Trilogy web addresses led to Latham's site and the old Blue Hawaiian address no longer pointed to the manufacturer. Latham dealers sell these lines under the Latham name. Pool & Spa Marketing, Latham: brands |
| River Pools | Manufacturing sold to Thursday Pools | 2021 | After a 2015 manufacturing joint venture, Thursday Pools acquired River Pools' manufacturing and national network outright. River-brand shells are made in Fortville, Indiana. River Pools Virginia remains an independent installer. The warranty revised in 2024 is a 35-year structural term that transfers once. How to protect your deposit
- Put the delivery window, the pool's weight and the warranty terms in the written contract.
- Pay in stages tied to delivery and installation where you can.
- In California, a home-improvement contractor's down payment is capped at $1,000 or 10% of the contract, whichever is less. Check the installer's license on the CSLB website.
How we score, and how we make money
Scores out of 10 are our editorial opinion, based on what each company publishes (prices, warranty documents, specifications) and on public records, checked October 2, 2026. To be listed, a company must be operating and sell factory-made pools to US homeowners. Every listed company starts at 7.0 and can earn up to 3 more points across seven criteria, in proportion to each weight. Where a company does not publish something we score, it counts as neutral, neither credit nor penalty. Scores compare companies within one type. No pool maker pays to be listed, scored or ranked, and we do not earn commissions from any maker.
Renology connects homeowners with independent pool contractors in parts of California and Washington, and those contractors pay us for the introductions. Our editors set scores using the method below and do not consider which brands a partner contractor installs.
| Criterion | Weight | What we look at |
|---|---|---|
| Price transparency | 20% | Whether a homeowner can see a price, and what it includes, before a sales call. |

Frequently asked questions
How much does a prefab pool cost?
It depends on the type and on what the price includes. As of October 2026, precast concrete plunge pools list at about $25,000 to $34,000 for the pool and equipment, container pools at about $31,770 to $81,500, and fiberglass pools at $45,000 to $150,000 installed according to manufacturer guides. HomeAdvisor's national average for a basic fiberglass install is $33,270. Delivery, crane, site work, fencing and permits decide the final number.
Can I get an inground pool for $30,000?
Rarely, all-in. HomeAdvisor's average for a basic fiberglass install is $33,270, and its range starts near $25,000, but manufacturers' own guides start at $45,000. A small precast or container pool costs about $25,000 to $37,000 before delivery, crane, site work and permits, which usually add $10,000 or more.
What is the downside of a fiberglass pool?
Shapes and sizes are fixed by the molds, widths top out around 16 ft because of highway shipping limits, and a crane needs a clear path to your yard. Some warranties end when you sell the house. The upside is a smooth surface, low maintenance and an install measured in weeks.
How long does a fiberglass pool last?
Makers back their shells with structural warranties of 25 years to lifetime. A well-installed fiberglass pool commonly lasts decades; the gelcoat surface is usually the first thing to need attention.
Is a container pool worth it?
It can be, if you want a lap-length or above-ground pool fast and like the look. The equipment comes fitted and installs are quick. Warranties are short with some sellers (1 to 3 years) and long with others, so compare the structural warranty first.
What is a plunge pool?
A small, deeper-than-a-spa pool made for cooling off and relaxing rather than swimming laps, usually 7 to 20 ft long and 4 to 6 ft deep. Precast concrete and fiberglass plunge pools arrive finished and are set by crane.
Do prefab pools need a permit?
Almost always. In California any structure holding water over 18 inches deep is a pool, and a new pool at a home needs at least two of seven drowning-prevention features, such as a 60 inch enclosure or a safety cover. Other states have their own barrier rules, so check with your building department.
Fiberglass vs concrete pool: which is better?
A site-built concrete (gunite) pool can be any shape and size and lasts a long time, but takes months and needs resurfacing. Fiberglass installs in weeks and needs fewer chemicals, but comes in fixed shapes up to about 16 x 40 ft. Precast concrete plunge pools sit in between: concrete, but small and factory-made.
